Rudolf Rocker (geboren am 25. März 1873 in Mainz; gestorben am 19. September 1958 in Mohegan, Maine, USA) war Buchbinder, Autor und Anarchist. Er war eine wichtige Persönlichkeit des deutschen und internationalen Anarcho-Syndikalismus.

Biographie

Rudolf Rocker wird am 25. März 1873 in Mainz als zweiter Sohn des Notendruckers Georg Philipp Rocker und Anna Margaretha Rocker geboren. Das Familienumfeld ist geprägt vom liberalen Geist der 1848/49-er Revolution. Bereits mit 14 Jahren ist Rudolf Rocker vollwaise und kommt in ein katholisches Erziehungsheim, wo er sehr schnell mit autoritären Strukturen und Verhaltensmustern konfrontiert wird. Er besucht die Volksschule und beginnt eine Buchbinderlehre. Über die Lektüre von Johann Most und Michael Bakunin tritt er der organisierten Arbeiterbewegung bei und wird Mitglied in der sozialdemokratischen Partei. Aus Protest gegen den Zentralismus in der Partei und an der zunehmenden Verspießerung schließt Rocker sich zunächst der Opposition der „Jungen“ innerhalb der Partei an. Auf dem Erfurter Parteitag 1891 schließlich werden zum Anarchismus hin tendierende Strömungen ausgeschlossen, weshalb Rocker gezwungen ist, seine organisatorischen und rednerischen Aktivitäten von der Partei weg zu verlagern, ohne jedoch den Konfrontationen mit dieser aus dem Weg zu gehen.

1933 flieht Rocker vor den Nationalsozialisten über die Schweiz in die USA. Seine Bekanntheit erleichtert ihm das Leben im Exil. Votierte Rocker im Verlauf des ersten Weltkrieges noch gegen Kriegseinsätze von jeder Seite und hatte deshalb Streitgespräche mit Peter Kropotkin, so kommt er diesem Urvater des Anarchismus nun gleich und bejaht den Krieg gegen das nationalsozialistische Deutschland. Durch den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg und den zweiten Weltkrieg versprengt und weitgehend desorganisiert, ist Rocker die wichtigste Anlaufstelle und Kontaktbörse für die Reste der Anarcho-Syndikalistischen Arbeiterbewegung weltweit. Auch in den USA ist Rocker unermüdlich tätig als Verfasser vieler theoretischer Schriften und begehrter Redner, bis er im September 1958 im Alter von 84 Jahren stirbt. Unter seinen zahlreichen Freundschaften befinden sich so bekannte Persönlichkeiten wie Peter Kropotkin, Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Diego abad de Santillan, Max Nettlau oder Erich Mühsam. Er ist Verfasser von Biographien über Max Nettlau, Johann Most und Fritz Kater. Rudolf Rocker steht als Praktiker wie als Theoretiker auf einer Stufe mit Pierre Joseph Proudhon, Michael Bakunin und Peter Kropotkin. Hervorzuheben ist noch sein Engagement gegen faschistische und kommunistische Diktatur gleichermaßen, welche er nicht als Gegensätzlichkeiten definiert, sondern als „auf dem selben Holz gewachsen“.
