Hi,

While search on the internet, I've found an article from the french newspaper Marianne (republican and independant, as they claim to be) about Anarchopedia. Unfortunatly, the website has moved and the article is no longer available, exept from google (http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:WZByI0wWNHkJ:www.marianne-en-ligne.fr/selection/virtual/bonsplans/e-docs/00/00/F3/6E/document_selection.phtml+anarchopedia&hl=fr&strip=1) I don't know if it was an online article or a copy of one published in the paper version of this newspaper.

Here is the article, followed by a translation for those who don't speak french:

Anarchopedia, an encyclopaedia that makes… authority

16/07/2007 - Guillaume Daudin

People know Wikipedia, a generalist encyclopaedia editable by any one, sometime they know Ekopedia, which is about alternative techniques of life. Here is Anarchopedia, an “Open portal of Knowledge about Anarchism, written in cooperation on the internet”. “Anarchist!”: Who, in politics, has never heard this insult to discredit immediately and radically the interlocutor? Not many body, obviously, because be an anarchist is being a pariah. Nevertheless, these one where not always unconsidered: Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was authoritative in French workers’ world in the second half of the 19^th century. About Max Weber, one of the greatest German sociologist, he as strongly militate in favour of the recruitment of an openly anarchist right teacher in his university, to bring a different viewpoint in the discipline.

In our days, times are hard for anarchists, because it don’t give them an unenviable social status, far from that. Even if this “recognition” is the least of there worries, it is certain that that as any political movement, it’s in their interest to be known, and if possible for goods reasons. How come launching, in September 2004, of Anarchopedia, an encyclopaedia that takes back Sebastien Faure’s project of /Encyclopédie anarchiste/ (1925-1934) and which have vocation of a anarchist knowledge gathering.

While consulting the project presentation page, we found problems that affect all the wiki – a wiki is a content management system of web sites that makes web pages freely editable by any authorised visitor. Here, these stakes are however exacerbated. One of the anarchist ideals is indeed absence of authority. From then now, Anarchopedians try to reach consensus on every subject in the writing. Which create difficulties, as anarchists are divided in different trends, and the term “anrcho” is adapt in infinites chapels: trade-unionist, individualist, feminist, christian, insurrectional, green, without omitting post-anarchists and multiply sub trends…

Legitimacy wrangles, opinion wrangle, are common in Anarchopedia. Because it’s difficult to define yourself when you are, basically, divided. The best way is hen to visit the /What anarchism is not/ page, which, by a negative definition of anarchism, allow to catch the great lines the encyclopaedia tries to follow. In this way, a total rejection of anarcho-capitalism, movement that advocate disparition of state to have as only organisation model capitalisme, remember that anarchism is fundamentally anti-liberal and socializing, in the first term’s sense.

With a wealth of a thousand of articles, this portal prove to be enriching and useful to catch a doctrine that has influence political history, while now residual. It remains that the best definition of anarchism might be the one expressed one day by Georges Brassens: “An anarchist is a man who crosses scrupulously on the crossing, because he hates to discuss with police officers”.
